The best road trips for seniors: scenic drives, planned at your pace

The most senior-friendly road trips combine short daily drives, walkable or shuttle-served stops, and comfortable lodging. Our five flagship routes are Utah's Mighty 5 national parks, a national-parks grand tour, California's Pacific Coast Highway, Route 66, and the New England fall-foliage loop. Each is planned around gentle driving days and the best base towns to sleep in.

Start by choosing your overnight base towns first, then plan the drives between them, keeping most legs under three hours. Book hotels with elevators, step-free entrances, and easy parking, and build in rest days. Our route guides do this for you: each one names the areas to stay, the senior-friendly hotels in each, and a day-by-day pace that never rushes.

For a first big parks drive, Utah's Mighty 5 is hard to beat: five national parks in a single compact loop, with mostly paved viewpoints and park shuttles that remove the hardest walking. It is scenic from the first mile and easy to break into comfortable days from five gateway towns.

For most of our routes, late spring (May to June) and early fall (September to October) offer the best mix of mild weather and thinner crowds. The New England foliage loop peaks in early-to-mid October, and the desert Southwest is most comfortable outside the summer heat. Each guide gives the ideal window for that specific drive.

You can drive your own car on every route we cover, and most senior road-trippers do, staying in hotels each night rather than an RV. If you would rather travel in a motorhome or campervan, the routes work either way, and we note the towns with good RV parks. The guides focus on hotel stays because that is how most travelers over 50 prefer to do it.
